Angevillers

Angevillers ( German Arsweiler ) is a commune with 1258 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Moselle in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district of Thionville -Ouest and the Canton Fontoy.

Geography

The community Angevillers is situated about ten kilometers northwest of Thionville and eight kilometers south derGrenze to Luxembourg at an altitude 315-418 m above sea level. The municipality covers 8.71 km ².

History

The first written mention dates back to the year 926, but there are traces of settlements, suggesting a far earlier settlement ( Roman coin finds, grave stones from the Merovingian time). Arsweiler been since the Middle Ages to the 17th century part of the Duchy of Luxembourg in the Holy Roman Empire and shared essentially its history. 1659 was the place in the context of Réunionspolitik to France and the French place name Angevillers came into use. From 1871 to 1918 he belonged as part of the Empire State Alsace-Lorraine to the German Empire. After the end of the First World War, the city fell again to France and remained there ever since, with the exception of the period of German occupation from 1940 to 1944.

Culture and sights

Near the village there is the built in the 1930s, Camp d' Angevillers, a barracks complex in the Maginot Line is located.
