Animal sanctuary

A sanctuary, sometimes referred to as Lebenshof or animal sanctuary is a facility that provides in pets, wildlife or livestock of people for an indefinite period. In contrast to an animal shelter, a sanctuary acquired animals conveys no further, but sees itself as the ultimate sanctuary.

Sanctuaries have no commercial purpose. Your self-image is based on animal welfare or animal rights positions.

First cases of facilities in which animals were fed up to their end of life, are known for the beginning of the 20th century. The writer and smallholder Christian Wagner granted all his animals on his farm my bread and also bought more animals free, he wanted to save them from slaughter.
