Anita DeFrantz

Anita De Frantz ( born October 4, 1952 in Philadelphia ) is a former American rower. Since 1986 she is member of the International Olympic Committee ( IOC).

Anita De Frantz was the first black man who took in the Olympics in rowing for the United States. With the Olympic debut of Frauenruderns at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal she rowed in the eight American and won the bronze medal. Two years later, she won silver in the four with coxswain at the World Rowing Championships 1978. 1980 she was nominated for the American Olympic team, but was not allowed to participate because of the Olympic boycott.

Anita De Frantz studied law in Connecticut and at the Pennsylvania State University where she earned her doctorate in 1977. She was a member of the organizing committee for the hosting of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and runs since 1987, the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles Foundation, which manages the net proceeds of the Olympic Games of 1984. From 1993 to 2013 she was Vice President of the International Rowing Federation Fédération Internationale des Sociétés d' Aviron.

In 1986, Anita De Frantz the fifth woman and the first black man who was elected to the IOC. From 1992 to 1997 she served on the Executive Committee of the IOC, after which it was for five years vice-president. In 2001 she ran for the IOC President, but was defeated by Jacques Rogge. 2013 Frantz was elected Deputy Chairman of the IOC.
