Ankarana sportive lemur

The Ankarana Lemur ( Lepilemur ankaranensis ) is a living primate in Madagascar from the group of lemurs within the lemurs.

Features

Ankarana lemurs reach a body length 20-22 cm, a tail length of 25-29 centimeters and a weight of 0.7 to 0.9 kilograms and are thus among the medium-sized lemurs. Its body structure with the roundish with the big eyes, the powerful hind legs and long tail that of the other members of this genus. Their fur is gray brown on the top and is darker towards the tail, the tail tip is black. Along the back runs a dark dorsal stripe. The coloration of the top of the head and shoulders will tend to brownish, which underside is gray. The ears are less than other lemurs.

Distribution and habitat

Ankarana lemurs inhabit the northern Madagascar, their range includes the regions Montagne d' Ambre, Ankarana and Analamerana. There they occur both in dry and in wet forests and are spread to 1500 meters altitude. Way of life

Ankarana lemurs, like all lemurs nocturnal, they sleep during the day among the lush vegetation or in tree hollows. At night, they go in search of food, where they move vertically climbing and jumping. They inhabit areas of approximately one hectare in size, interactions between adult animals are scarcely observed. Their diet consists mainly of leaves.

Endangering

Through human settlement activities and the mining their range has been greatly reduced and fragmented and includes now only around 5,000 km ². Another threat to the Ankarana lemurs, the hunting for their meat represents the IUCN lists the species as " critically endangered " ( endangered ).
