Ann-Louise Skoglund

Eva Ann -Louise Skoglund ( born June 28, 1962 in Karlstad, Sweden ) is a former Swedish athlete. She was the first European Champion in the 400 - meter hurdles.

Skoglund was already at the Olympic Games in 1980 in the 400 - meter race at the start, but resigned in the run- off. At the European Championships in 1982 in Athens for the first time was the 400 - meter hurdles for women on the program. Quite surprisingly, won the then 20- year old Swede in 54.58 seconds the title ahead of Petra Pfaff from the GDR and the Frenchwoman Chantal Rega.

After Skoglund 1983 had become at the World Championships in Helsinki in 54.80 seconds Sixth behind two runners from the Soviet Union and three runners from the GDR, she was allowed to work out good final chance at the Olympic debut of the 400 - meter hurdles race in 1984 in Los Angeles. Your chances rose when it became clear that the runners from the Soviet Union and the GDR would not be at the start because of the Olympic boycott.

In the finale in Los Angeles were eight runners from eight countries and five continents at the start. The result was:

  • 1st place in 54.61 seconds Nawal El Moutawakel from Morocco
  • 2nd place in 55.20 seconds Judi Brown of the U.S.
  • 3rd place in 55.41 seconds Cristieana Cojocaru of Romania
  • 4th place in 55.42 seconds Pilavullakandi Usha from India
  • 5th place in 55.43 seconds Ann -Louise Skoglund from Sweden
  • 6th place in 56.21 seconds Debbie Flintoff from Australia
  • 7th place in 56.55 seconds Tuija Helander from Finland
  • 8th place in 57.15 seconds Sandra Farmer from Jamaica

So Skoglund missed by two hundredths of seconds an Olympic medal.

At the European Championships in 1986 in Stuttgart Skoglund was then with a new Swedish record of 54.15 seconds behind fourth Marina Stepanova from the Soviet Union and behind Sabine Busch and Cornelia Feuerbach from the GDR.

In her competition time, she was 1.75 meters tall and weighed 58 kg.

2006 won with Susanna Kallur first time after Skoglund again a Swedish runner gold at European Championships, this time in the 100 - meter hurdles.
