Anna Anni

Anna Anni (* 1926 in Marradi, † 1 January 2011, Florence) was an Italian costume designer. She worked in film, television, theater and ballet.

Life and work

Anna Anni studied art at the Istituto d' Arte in Florence. First, she wanted to be a painter, painted pottery, toys and materials. Then she turned to the theater. She debuted in 1953 as a costume designer, as they decorated the cast of the comedy Volpone by Ben Jonson and La Locandiera by Carlo Goldoni. In both cases, Orson Welles directed.

1956 Anni worked at the Costume design for the opera Turandot by Giacomo Puccini first time with director Franco Zeffirelli. They remained professional and friendly relationship up to Annis death. From 1966 to 1989, Anni costume at the Florence opera house, Teatro Comunale di Firenze, starting with the production of Verdi's Luisa Miller. She has worked with directors such as Mauro Bolognini, Raymond Rouleau (1904-1981) and Sandro Sequi.

From the 1980s took Anni costume design at Zeffirelli opera films such as Cavalleria Rusticana, Pagliacci, Otello and Don Carlo. For the Kostumdesign of Otello 1987 Anni and costume designer Maurizio Millenotti been awarded an Academy Award nomination (1946 *). Later movies followed as Tea with Mussolini and Callas Forever, which also was directed by Zeffirelli. They also worked together on numerous opera performances in the Arena di Verona. Here Anni designed costumes for Carmen (1995-2010) and Aida (2002-2010).

1995 Anni worked as a costume designer in the performance of Carmen for the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and two years later at a performance of Aida at the National Theatre in Tokyo.

With director Beppe Menegatti and his wife Carla Fracci Anni worked on more than 20 performances of ballet. These included romantiques pieces like Coppelia, Giselle, Il fiore di pietra and homages. Anni also designed costumes for operas, which led Menegatti directors, such as L' Equivoco Stravagante by Gioachino Rossini and Bellini's La sonnambula.

Anni was known that she put a lot of attention to detail and historical authenticity in the costume design. Well-known opera singers like Maria Callas, Montserrat Caballé and Luciano Pavarotti wore their costumes. Her work has been exhibited in the Galleria d' Arte Moderna Palazzo Pitti in 2006. 2011 was held a memorial exhibition of drawings and costumes at the Teatro Comunale di Firenze, for many years worked for the Anni.

Anni died with 84 years in Florence.
