Anna Brownell Jameson

Anna Jameson ( born May 19, 1797 in Dublin, † March 17, 1860 in London) was an English writer and a total of more than 15 years of her life working as a governess.

Life and work

Anna Jameson ( pron. dschehms'n ), received by her father, the miniature painter Murphy, early on artistic stimulation and became known as a writer by their first written on an Italian travel diary Diary of an ennuyée (1826, 3rd edition 1838). She was a longtime friend of Ottilie von Goethe (1796-1872), the daughter of Goethe who during their trips to the Rhine, to Weimar and Italy often visited.

1827 married the lawyer Robert Jameson, but later lived separately from him, visited subsequent journeys Germany, France and North America and died on 17 March 1860 in London.

  • Characteristics of the female characters of Shakespeare, a fine portrayal of Shakespeare's female characters (1832 );
  • Winter studies and summer rambles in Canada, (1838 ).
  • The Relative Position of Mothers and Governesses (1846 )

  • Memoirs of the early Italian painters (1845, 2 vols );
  • Sacred and legendary art (1848, 4th edition 1865), which sets out the development of the religious history as it confronts us in the works of painting;
  • Legends of the monastic orders (1850, 3rd edition 1866);
  • Legends of the Madonna ( 3rd edition 1865) and the important for the iconography
  • Scriptural and legendary history of our Lord ( Lady Eastlake, 1859-64, 2 vols );
  • A commonplace book of thoughts memories and fancies (1854 ).

She also gave an English editing of the plays of Princess Amalie of Saxony under the title: out Pictures of the social life of Germany (1840 ).
