Anna Hill Johnstone

Anna Hill Johnstone ( born April 7, 1913 in Greenville, South Carolina; † 16 October 1992 in Lenox, Massachusetts) was an American costume designer. Johnstone, who designed both for film productions as well as theater productions costumes was twice nominated for an Oscar.

Life

Anna Hill Johnstone attended Barnard College in New York City that she left in 1934 with a degree. Johnstone began her career on Broadway, where she worked as an assistant costume designer different as Irene Sharaff and Lucinda Ballard. For the first time ever as a costume designer responsible Johnstone in 1946 worked in the production Temper in the Wind, which was performed from December 1946 to January 1947 at the Playhouse Theatre. She designed the costumes for big productions like Anna Hill Johnstone of Tennessee Williams and After the Fall, based on the homonymous work of Arthur Miller. In film production, she worked several times for Sidney Lumet and Elia Kazan.

Johnstone was married more than 50 years Curville Jones Robinson.
