Anna Magnani

Anna Magnani ( born March 7, 1908 in Rome, † September 26, 1973 ibid ) was an Italian film actress.

Life

Anna Magnani, born illegitimate child in poverty, grew up with her grandmother in Rome in the Kingdom of Italy. She performed in nightclubs as a singer in order to survive as a student at the State Drama School in Rome. After graduating, she joined a traveling theater. She has appeared in 1928 in Augusto Geninas silent film Scampolo and in the 1930s in several smaller films. She is best known, however, only in 1941 with the film Teresa Venerdi by Vittorio De Sica.

The breakthrough as an internationally acclaimed new movie star in Italy she succeeded in 1945, when Roberto Rossellini - with whom she was also romantically involved privately - gave her the role of Pina in Rome, Open City, a masterpiece of neo-realism. From then on she only worked for the film and for all the leading directors of the 1950s and 1960s.

In 1955 she dedicated the American director Daniel Mann on the Tennessee Williams adaptation The Rose Tattoo. For her portrayal of Italian-American widow Serafina Delle Rose is located next Magnani Burt Lancaster became the first Italian actress Oscar as best actress. Two years later she was still nominated a second time for an Oscar. She played the lead role in George Cukor melodrama Wild is the Wind.
