Anna Maria is a city in Manatee County in the U.S. state of Florida with 1,503 inhabitants ( 2010).

Geography

Anna Maria is the northernmost of three municipalities on Anna Maria Iceland, an island on the Gulf Coast of Florida. The city is bordered to the south directly to Holmes Beach and is located approximately 10 kilometers west of Bradenton and about 80 km south of Tampa.

History

According to information from the municipality Anna Maria was the first place the island on which the first settlers built their homes. The first settlers on the island said to have been " George Emerson Bean" from Connecticut. He built his house in 1893 on today's "Rod & Reel Pier" and settled on 140 acres. His son, George W. Bean founded, with John Roser collectively, the " Anna Maria Beach Company ". Streets and sidewalks were created; Homes, businesses, and the first water supply were built. 1911, before there was a bridge to the mainland, a pier on the " Zampa Bay " was built on the supply as well as the boat trips were handled.

1913 John Roser built the first church on the island of Anna Maria. The illuminated cross on the steeple of the Roser Memorial Community Church was a beacon for fishermen. Captain Mitch Davis, the first mayor of the city of Anna Maria, was elected in 1925. After the island was also supplied with electricity. The first school was built in 1930, on the spot where now stands the community center. In 1921, the bridge ( Cortez Bridge ) was built to the mainland. Thus, the supply of the inhabitants was possible by means of horse-drawn carriages. In 1957, the frail wooden bridge was replaced by a modern, stable construction.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 1,503 inhabitants distributed to 1,559 households. The population density was 751.5 inh. / Km ². 97.9 % of the population were white, 0.3% African American, 0.7 % Native American and 0.5 % Asian Americans. 0.2 % were members of other ethnic groups and 0.5 % of various ethnicities. 3.1% of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 52.6 % of all households lived in 8.8 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 60.8 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 1.89 persons and the average family size is 2.33 people.

9.4% of the population were younger than 20 years, 8.1% were 20 to 39 years old, 30.0% were 40-59 years old and 52.6 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 61 years. 48.0 % of the population were male and 52.0 % female.

The average annual income was $ 55,078, while 4.0% of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 98.82 % of the population spoke Spanish and 1.18%.

Economy

An industry there is not, the inhabitants live mainly from here vacationing people. The main employment sectors are: education, health and social services: ( 22.8 %), trade / retail ( 16.6%), future technologies, management, administration ( 13.2%), Arts, entertainment, food, places to eat: (12.4%).

Traffic

The Florida State Road 789 runs from north to south of the island and continue on Longboat Key to Sarasota. The nearest airport is Sarasota- Bradenton International Airport ( some 30 km south-east ).
