Anna Thomas

Anna Thomas ( born July 12, 1948 in Stuttgart) is an American screenwriter, film producer and cookbook author.

Life and work

Anna Thomas was born in Stuttgart. Her family came from Poland. Even as a child she moved to the United States, where she grew up in Michigan and California. She studied film at the University of California at Los Angeles where he acquired a Master of Fine Arts.

During her studies, Thomas wrote her first cookbook with vegetarian recipes. It was published in 1972 with Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. under the title of The Vegetarian Epicure and sold over one million copies. It was twelve times reprinted and translated into several languages.

In 1973, she worked with her fellow students Gregory Nava ( born 1949 ) together on a film project. Two years later they married. Then their first film together, the dramatic romance The Confessions of Amans in which both wrote the screenplay and directed by Nava appeared. The film was honored at the 1975 Chicago International Film Festival with a Gold Hugo. A long-term professional cooperation of the couple began.

Published in 1978 Thomas another cookbook, the equally successful sequel, The Vegetarian Epicure, Book Two. With the income from it they produced the gambling in Scotland Horror visit from beyond the grave, in which she also directed and wrote the screenplay.

Together with her husband, who has worked as a director and screenwriter, Thomas 1983 produced the film El Norte. He was nominated in 1985 for Best Original Screenplay for an Oscar in the category.

Since 2001, Thomas conducts workshops for screenwriters at the American Film Institute. By now divorced, she produced a documentary for the first time in 2008 and then published in their fourth cookbook with a focus on soups. Love soup was honored in 2010 with a James Beard Foundation Award in the Healthy Focus (focus on health).
