Anne Catherine of Brandenburg

Anna Catherine of Brandenburg (* July 26, 1575 in Halle ( Saale), † March 29, 1612 in Copenhagen) was a princess of Brandenburg and by marriage Queen of Denmark and Norway.

Life

Anna Katharina was the eldest daughter of the Elector Joachim Frederick of Brandenburg (1546-1608) from his first marriage to Catherine (1549-1602), daughter of Margrave John of Brandenburg- Kuestrin ( 1513-1571 ). The Princess her mother was not dissimilar, described rather average in education and appearance.

After a perilous voyage across the Baltic Sea kurbrandenburgische the family took part in the coronation of King Christian IV of Denmark (1577-1648) part of the August 29, 1596. Here Anna Katharina learned to know her future husband. Christian sent a delegation to lock Wolmirstedt, where Anna Katharina's father resided at that time as an administrator of the archbishopric of Magdeburg and called a halt to the hand of the princess. On November 27, 1597 wedding took place in Haderslev and on 12 July of the following year Anna Katharina was crowned in the Church of Our Lady in Copenhagen to the Danish queen.

Even during the marriage entertained Christian an extramarital relationship with the daughter of the mayor of Copenhagen, Kirsten Matsdatter. The later Danish Reichsmarschall Jørgen urn (1598-1642) began his career as a noble youth of Queen Anne Catherine.

Anna Catherine is buried in Roskilde Cathedral.
