Anne Hyde

Lady Anne Hyde ( born March 12, 1637 Cranbourne Lodge in the Great Park of Windsor, Berkshire, England; † March 31, 1671 at St. James 's Palace in London) was the first wife of Jacob Stuart, Duke of York, who fourteen years after her death, when James II, King of England and James VII would be king of Scotland.

Life

Anne Hyde was the eldest daughter of Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon ( 1608-1674 ) and his second wife Lady Frances Aylesbury ( 1617-1667 ). At the time of King Charles I of England, she went with her parents and three siblings into exile. The family then took up residence in Antwerp. Lady Anne was a maid of honor to the Princess Maria of Orange. End of the 1650s also courted the exiled James Stuart, the handsome Anne, but insisted on a promise of marriage before starting a liaison. Supposedly they were married secretly on November 24, 1659 in Breda, the Netherlands, but in any case included a secret agreement on their future marriage. After Jacob had returned in May 1660 his now king advanced elder brother Charles II to England, he wanted nothing more to do with his promise of marriage, but eventually had to hold pressure from Anne's father and his royal brother of his promise. The official wedding of James Stuart and the already very pregnant Anne Hyde was held in London on 3 September 1660. The marriage of the Duke of York, the pair was marked by little affection, and Lady Anne suffered from the many infidelities of her husband. She sought in later years in lush dining pleasure, comfort, and therefore was quite obese. In 1671 she died at the age of only 34 years. It took place in the chapel of Henry VII at Westminster their final resting place.
