Anne of Green Gables

Anne of Green Gables (Original Title: Anne of Green Gables ) is a children's book of Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery, whose first edition appeared in 1908.

Action

Anne Shirley is a red-haired, freckled orphan who is sent by mistake to the elderly bachelor Matthew Cuthbert and his brittle, also unmarried sister Marilla to live there. Matthew and Marilla take on Anne, although they had a boy expected, which should help them on their farm. It is located on Green Gables ( the name comes from the green gables of the house) in the fictional town of Avonlea on Prince Edward Iceland.

Anne's wild imagination, her incessant talking and her fiery temperament put them in the center of a range of fun adventures. As she grows up, supported by the love and discipline Marilla and Matthew, it develops into an intelligent and independent young woman who uses her imagination constructively. The book describes their development from 11 to 16 years.

Other important persons are her best friend Diana Barry, her class rival Gilbert Blythe and the " gossiper " the place Rachel Lynde.

Background

L. M. Montgomery was inspired to the book from a newspaper article that reported on a couple who accidentally instead of an orphan boy an orphan girl was sent, they nevertheless took up with him. L. M. But Montgomery processed memories of her own childhood on the large rural Prince Edward Iceland (Canada) the end of the 19th century.
