Annio da Viterbo

Annius of Viterbo (* um 1432 in Viterbo, † November 13, 1502, born as Giovanni Nanni ( Nenni ) also Joannes Annius Viterb ( i) ensis ) was an Italian Dominican friar, who worked at the papal court as antiquarian and historian. He is known as a forger of historical documents.

He is the author of the debunked as pseudo - Berossus forgery, which was printed in 1499 in Rome and connects the story of the Bible with the Germania of Tacitus. His pedigree alleged German tribes had a far-reaching effect in the equation of Germans with the Germans. It has been much debated over the authenticity of these documents, but Joseph Justus Scaliger has demonstrated the fakes. His student Erasmus Stella ( about 1460-1521 ) was a " literary ambitious forger " in Working on the prehistory of Zwickau and Leipzig.
