Annunciation (Leonardo)

The Annunciation by Leonardo da Vinci and Andrea del Verrocchio is a painting that was painted with oil paint and tempera on wood. The dimensions are 98 cm height x 217 cm width.

The picture is from 1867 at the Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence ( Italy ) issued. It was originally in the church of San Bartolomeo in the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore.

Painter

The painting was attributed to the 19th century Domenico Ghirlandaio. In fact, other artists have worked: Leonardo da Vinci, Andrea del Verrocchio and at least one additional, but unknown artists who performed subsequently an extension of angel wings.

Motif

The picture shows a story of the New Testament: Archangel Gabriel tells Mary in Nazareth that her son Jesus Christ will come to the world ( the Annunciation / The Annunciation ). The angel is left in the picture, Maria right. Maria scrolls with the right hand in a Bible. The angel holds a Madonna lily ( a Florentine icon) on the left hand. Before Maria a small sarcophagus can be seen. The background consists of a mountainous landscape with trees and a harbor.
