Anonymus (chronicler)

Anonymus was a chronicler and notary at the court of King Béla ( Bele Regis notary ) in the late 12th, early 13th century. Presumably it is Béla III. Yard, but since the exact year of birth Anonymus ' is not known, it is not detectable. The name of the chronicler is also unknown, only that his name began with a P., because he called himself " P. dictus magister "(Eng. " the master who calls himself P. " )

Some researchers claim that it is the Bishop of Győr, Péter, is. Others suspect behind the name Pál Péter, the Bishop of Transylvania, others champion Pous, the notary at the court of Béla IV

Works

Anonymus is an important author in medieval Hungary, who wrote the history of settlement of the Magyars in 57 chapters. He also reported the names of tribal leaders, but most historians consider the information that appear in Anonymus ' chronicle, not authentic.

His main work, the Gesta Hungarorum ( "Deeds of the Hungarians " ), which was written in the 13th century, is preserved in the National Széchenyi Library. The work has been translated into Hungarian in 1791 by István Lethenyey, 1799 by István Mándy and 1860 by Károly Szabó from Latin.

The information in the Gesta Hungarorum suggest that the author comes from the Obert hot area, and that he had close contacts with the family Aba. The preface makes it clear that he studied in Western Europe, probably in Paris.
