Anselmo Duarte

Anselmo Duarte Bento (* April 21, 1920 in Salto, São Paulo, † November 7, 2009 in São Paulo) was a Brazilian actor, film director and screenwriter.

Life

Anselmo Duarte is a pioneer of the new Brazilian cinema Cinema Novo in the late 1950s and 1960s. His works have won many awards, he won the Palme d'Or, for example, "Fifty steps to righteousness " (O Pagador de Promessas ) at the Film Festival of Cannes 1962. In addition, this film was nominated for an Oscar. His film " Possessed of Catulé " ( Vereda de Salvação ) was in competition at the Berlinale 1965.

Anselmo Duarte died at the age of 89 years after a stroke at a hospital in Sao Paulo.
