Anserimimus

Skeletal reconstruction of Anserimimus

  • Mongolia

Anserimimus is a dinosaur genus from the group of Ornithomimosauria within the Theropoda. He lived during the Late Cretaceous in what is now East Asia.

Features

From Anserimimus only parts of the fuselage skeleton are known to date. As far as known, was like his physique largely that of the other Ornithomimosauria. It was a slender, lightly built dinosaur, the biped was moving along on their hind legs. Presumably he could run fast, thanks to its graceful legs and its elongated lower leg and metatarsals. The arms were stronger than those of his relatives. The humerus had enlarged Epicondyli ( bony prominences, which served as a muscle attachment point ) and the clutches of the fingers were not bent and flattened at the bottom. The skull is not yet known. What is nourished Anserimimus, is unclear, as is the function of strong arms.

Discovery and designation

The fossil remains of Anserimimus were discovered in the Nemegt formation in the Mongolian province Bajanchongor Aimag and first described in 1988. The name means " goose mimic " and is in the tradition that Ornithomimosauria are often referred to as an imitator ( - mimus ) of various birds. Type species and only known species is platinychus Anserimimus. The Fund will chronostratigraphic (early Maastrichtian ) and geochronological dating to the late Cretaceous to an age 72-69 million years.
