Ansfried of Utrecht

Blessed Ansfried (also Ansfried of Utrecht, Ansfrid, Ansfridus; * 940, † May 3, 1010 in the monastery Hohorst in Leusden ) was Count in Leuven, Bishop of Utrecht and monk.

Ansfried was married to Hilsund (also Hilsondis, Hereswint ), Countess of Stryen. He then separated from his wife and daughter to go to the monastery and gave the bishopric of Liege, then under the Bishop Notker, his county Huy. His wife went to the 992 he founded, later famous Abbey of Thorn.

After initially refusing to Ansfried found at the insistence of Emperor Otto and Notker 995 ready to accept the Bishopric of Utrecht. At the end of his life he retired blind in the Benedictine monastery founded by him in 1006 Hohorst or Heiligenberg near Utrecht and died there as a monk.
