Ansley J. Coale

Ansley Coale Johnson ( born November 14, 1917 in Baltimore, Maryland; † 5 November 2002 in Newtown, Pennsylvania) was an American demographer. His contributions are essential theory approaches for calculating dynamic population models. Together with Paul Demeny, he led a mid -1960s model life tables, which enabled the calculation of mortality and fertility rates in spite of incomplete data.

Life

Coale was first a student at Princeton University. There he spent his entire academic career. From 1959 to 1975 he was director of the Office of Population Research at the University. From 1967 to 1968 he was president of the Population Association of America, and from 1977 to 1981 president of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population.

He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the following universities: Université catholique de Louvain (1979 ), University of Liège ( 1983), University of Pennsylvania (1983) and Princeton University ( 1994).

Ansley J. Coale died at the age of 84 years, heart failure, after he had suffered for several years from Parkinson 's disease.
