Anson County, North Carolina
Anson County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Wadesboro, which was named after Colonel Thomas Wade.
Geography
The County is located in the central south-west of North Carolina, on the south by South Carolina and has an area of 1391 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Stanly County, Richmond County and Union County.
Anson County is divided into eight townships: Ansonville, Burnsville, Gulledge, Lanesboro, Lilesville, Morven, Wadesboro and White Store.
History
Anson County was formed in 1750 from parts of Bladen County. It was named after George Anson, 1st Baron Anson, a British admiral and Chief of the Admiralty, explorers, and defender of the coasts of North Carolina from pirates.

According to the census of 2000, there were 25.275 people in Anson County. Of these, 1,427 people lived in collective centers, the other residents living in 9,204 households and 6,663 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 49.53 percent White, 48.64 percent Black or African American, 0.45 percent Native American, 0.57 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.32 percent from other races groups; about 0.46 per cent were from two or more races. 0.83 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 9,204 households out of which 31.0 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 47.8 percent were married couples living together, 19.8 percent were single mothers and 27.6 percent were non-families. 25.1 percent of all households and 11.0 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.09.
25.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.6 percent 18 to 24 years 29.0 percent between 25 and 44, 22.8 percent between 45 and 64, and 14.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 37 years. In all females there were 96.5 males. In all women aged 18 and over, 95.8 males.
The median income for a household (median ) was $ 29,849, and the median income for a family $ 35,870. Males had a median income of $ 27,297, women $ 20,537. The per capita income was $ 14,853. 17.8 percent of the population and 15.5 percent of families are below the poverty line. 23.9 percent of them are children and adolescents under age 18 and 16.7 percent are 65 years or older.
