Ant (chair)

The ant (Danish: Myren, . Engl The Ant ) is a well-known wooden chair by the Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen. The chair was designed by Jacobsen in 1951 for the canteen of the Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk. From 1952, it was produced by the Danish furniture manufacturer Fritz Hansen.

In addition to their characteristic three legs, the ant is characterized by the use of - for the time of their development - modern materials and production techniques. Seat and back are made of a single piece of veneer plywood, which must be bent for this purpose. The backrest narrows sharply at its lower portion. This waist shape was eponymous for the chair. In the first version of the chair his legs were made of plastic, but were replaced in later versions by steel pipes. The materials used and its construction give the chair a comparatively low weight at the same time stability. The ant is also stackable.

The ant is regarded as predecessors of Jacobsen's Series 7 chairs from 1955, but four legs have. The chair is part of several collections of museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Design Museum Danmark in Copenhagen world.
