Antal Hekler

Anton Hekler (Hungarian: Antal Hekler ) ( born 1 February 1882 in Budapest, † March 3, 1940 ) was a Hungarian Classic archaeologist and art historian.

Life

Hekler doctorate in 1903 in Budapest in political science Dr. jur. and enrolled in 1904 in Munich by Adolf Furtwängler for the study of classical archeology. In 1905 he published his first study on ancient sculpture and after some two years of study, he earned his second doctorate in Germany. He then went back to Budapest, where he first worked at the Hungarian National Museum and later was professor of archeology and art history at the University of Budapest. In Hungary, he devoted himself to further ancient art, but also the history of art in Hungary. On Heklers suggestion, the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts from the Munich collection Paul Arndt acquired in 1908 first 135 Greek, Roman and Italian sculptures and 1914 another 650 terracotta figures. Meanwhile Hekler had honorary taken care of the sculpture collection of the Art Museum.
