Antarctic toothfish

Giant Antarctic Cod ( Dissostichus mawsoni )

The giant Antarctic Cod ( Dissostichus mawsoni ) is also called Antarctic hake and pelagic in the seas around Antarctica and the northern boundary of the Southern Ocean to the Antarctic convergence at depths 0-1600 meters.

Features

The predatory fish are 1.75 meters long and can reach a weight of 80 kg. They are almost uniformly brown in color and have otherwise only some irregular and incomplete dark transverse bands and a few dark spots.

  • Fins formula: Dorsal VIII-IX/25-27, Anal 25-26.

Use

Together with the Patagonian toothfish ( Dissostichus eleginoides ), this fish is fished intensively, particularly in recent years. The animals are caught on longlines, which are about 130 kilometers long and have up to 30,000 hooks. They are now under threat from overfishing.
