Antarctic Treaty Secretariat

Secretariat of the Antarctic Treaty ( Antarctic Treaty Secretariat (ATS) ) is an organization responsible for the management of multiple tasks of the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings - ( ATCM - Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting ) is responsible. For example, the support of the annual meetings of the States signatory to the Antarctic Treaty or the publication of the annual report. The organization was founded in 2003 during the XXVI ATCM in Madrid.

Other activities that are carried out by the Secretariat, include a support for the meetings of the Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP ), the improvement of communication between the signatory states of the Treaty, as well as recompilation, storage and distribution of information, such as the ATCM - and CEP records.

The first secretary was Jan Huber from the Netherlands. He held the position for five years held until 31 August 2009. He was replaced by Manfred Reinke, who was elected by the ATCM in Baltimore.

Until 1 September 2004, the Secretariat had no permanent facility. Since 2004, the Secretariat of the Antarctic Treaty in Buenos Aires is set up.
