Antelias

Antelias (Arabic أنطلياس, the name comes from the Greek Ante Helios, dt opposite the sun) is a town in Lebanon, about 5 kilometers north of Beirut.

The inhabitants are mostly Christian ( Maronite, Greek Catholic, Greek Orthodox and Armenians ). Antelias is home to St. Elie, a Maronite convent with two churches. At the site is now the seat of the Armenian Apostolic Catholicos of Cilicia, which before the Armenian Genocide in Sis, today Kozan (Turkey) resided.

Geography

Antelias is located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and the plane has been cultivated for a long time with orange groves and banana bushes. Since the 1950s, the colonization and urbanization of Antelias began. Today there are still some green spaces available. Antelias is also called the gateway to the Metn region ( Bikfaya Dhour el Chweir, Baskinta and Aintoura ), exist in many vacation resorts, factories, shopping malls (St. Elie center, ABC, Spinney ) and schools. Antelias also has a marina. In Antelias a book fair takes place annually.

History

Antelias is known for Ksar Akil, near which a 42,000 years old skeleton was found. In 1895 the St. Elie Church was built. In St. Elie - monastery was in 1840 a ​​historic agreement ( Ammiyat Antelias ) between the various religious communities, especially signed between the Maronites and Druzen, Lebanon, to protest against the oppression of the Ottoman occupation to form a unit.
