Antequera is a Philippine municipality in the province of Bohol. It has 14,481 inhabitants ( census May 1, 2010 ).

History

The territory of the municipality of Antequera was inhabited early on by the Eskaya, an indigenous tribe native to Bohol. Fertile soils and abundant water supply by numerous streams and springs provided good conditions for colonization. At the time of the Spanish colonization of the territory belonging to a community Maribojoc Barangay named Agad was then. The center of Agad was at that time in what is now Barangay Celing. The located there Boho Spring is still one of the most important sources for drinking water supply. With ever-increasing population, the inhabitants Agads ranged in the Spanish central government a petition to become an independent municipality. A corresponding decree was finally signed by the Governor General of the Philippines Don Romualdo Crespo on 17 March 1876. The newly formed township was named Antequera, named after the city in Spain (→ Antequera ), the birthplace of Don Romualdo Crespo.

Attractions

A much-visited attraction is the located in Barangay Mag- Aso Mag- Aso Falls. A comprehensive 197 steps staircase leads through a wooded slope down to the of nearly 8 meters high waterfall cascading down. The name of the waterfall is derived from the word Aso from, which means in the local dialect smoke, and plays on the visual as smoke seemingly finely atomized water mist over the falls on. The split into two arms waterfall empties into a natural pool, ideal for swimming in stunning scenery.

Antequera is also known for its wickerwork, which are offered for sale among other things, every Sunday on the market. The basket weaving dates back to the early 1900s and had over many decades to the main sources of income of the inhabitants. Use find this wicker, rattan, bamboo and some other native materials.
