Anthony Abbott

Anthony Chisholm Abbott PC ( * November 26, 1930 in Montreal, Quebec ) is a Canadian lawyer and politician of the Liberal Party of Canada and the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, who was for some years a Member of the House of Commons and Minister.

Life

Anthony Abbott, son of longtime House of Representatives, Minister, and subsequently Judge of the Supreme Court of Canada Douglas Abbott graduated, post-school study, which he finished with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). Another study of law, he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws ( LL.B. ) and then began working as a lawyer.

In the Lower House elections of July 8, 1974, Abbott was elected as a candidate of the Liberal Party in the constituency of Mississauga for deputies in the lower house, but already lost this mandate at the next general election on 22 May 1979.

On September 15, 1976, he was appointed by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau as Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs in the 20th Canadian Cabinet and held this ministerial office until 15 September 1977. Afterwards, he was Minister of State for Small Business, before he last dated 24 November 1978 on 3 June 1979 was minister for national income until the end of Trudeau's tenure.

After retiring from government and the House of Commons took his legal career again. In addition, he worked 1980-1988 as economic and legal adviser to a London-based Canadian law firm and as president of the Retail Council of Canada.

Later he left the Liberal Party and was a candidate in the elections of 21 November 1988 instead for the Progressive Conservative party in the constituency of Eglinton - Lawrence for a parliamentary seat, but suffered another defeat.
