Anthony Adverse

Anthony Adverse is an American feature film from the year 1936. The film is based on the development of novel Adverso Antonio ( Anthony Adverse ) by Hervey Allen.

Action

The film tells the life story of Anthony Adverse, an adventurer in the early 19th century. His mother is Maria Bonnyfeather who has a love affair with Denis Moore. She becomes pregnant and her husband Marquis Don Luis gets out that he is not the father, but Denis Moore. In a duel he kills Denis Moore. Don Luis flees with his pregnant wife from Italy. After the birth of the Son of Mary dies in childbed. The father gives the child into a monastery. There he is given the name Anthony and is educated to a Christian man. Later, his grandfather John Bonnyfeather takes him on without the boy knows about this family relationship. John gives him the surname Adverse.

Years later, the young Anthony falls in love with Angela and Giuseppe marries the young woman. A short time later, Anthony has to leave for Cuba. Angela sees this as a separation and begins a career as an opera singer. From Cuba Anthony comes to Africa, where he is involved in slave shops. When he later returned to Italy, he discovers that John Bonnyfeather died and his housekeeper Faith Paleologus has torn his fortune in itself. In addition, she is married to Don Luis. Anthony travels to Paris, to fight there to his heritage. In Paris, he meets his friend Vincent Nolte again. Nolte is a banker and Anthony saved him once from bankruptcy. In Paris, he finds Angela again. She is the mother of his son, now an opera star and mistress of Napoleon Bonaparte. Anthony snatches her son and flees with him to the United States where he wants to start a new life. In that time Mexican El Paso, the two can be finally settled as a farmer.

Background

The epic novel by Hervey Allen broad development comprises 1,224 pages. This monumental work was rewritten by screenwriter Sheridan Gibney on a script for 140 minutes and minimized. Director Mervyn LeRoy was Michael Curtiz as an assistant director to the side. However Curtiz did not appear in the credits.

In Germany the film never came in the theaters. The German premiere was only on 1 November 1992 on ZDF.

Awards

The film nominated for seven Academy Awards and received a total of four awards at the Oscars 1937. Gale Sondergaard was awarded in the category Best Supporting Actress, Erich Wolfgang Korngold in the category of Best Original Score. Anthony Adverse not received the Academy Award for Best Picture, this went to The Great Ziegfeld, could still win with four awards most Oscars this year.
