Anthony Dowell

Sir Anthony Dowell ( born February 16, 1943 in London ) is a British ballet dancer and choreographer.

Anthony Dowell was trained at the Hampshire School and The Royal Ballet School. In 1961 he became a member of the Royal Ballet. Two years later he was selected by Frederick Ashton, the then director of the Royal Ballet, for the role of Oberon in The Dream of production. It was the first collaboration with Antoinette Sibley, who danced the Titania. They were one of the finest pairs of ballet history.

He became known to a wider audience quickly through its combination of excellent technique and expression. Among others, he danced Albrecht in Giselle and Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake.

In 1966, he was " Principal Dancer" of the Royal Ballet appointed and is considered one of the most outstanding dancers of the 20th century.

He was awarded the title of " Commander of the Order of the British Empire" ( CBE) in 1972. He was the youngest dancer to receive this honor ever bestowed was.

Since 1995 he bears the title Sir Anthony.

From 1986 to 2000 he took over the management of the Royal Ballet.
