Anthony Franciosa

Anthony Franciosa ( born October 25, 1928 in New York City, New York, † January 19, 2006 in Los Angeles, California; actually Anthony Papaleo ) was an American actor.

Life

Anthony Franciosa played as a 18 -year-old briefly at a youth theater. There were other engagements at Off-Broadway theaters, whereupon he received a drama scholarship. Erwin Piscator gave him his first engagement at a theater. Franciosa starred in numerous plays and received favorable reviews.

Elia Kazan gave him in 1957 a first role in the film A Face in the Crowd, George Cukor and Fred Zinnemann procured the now experienced theater actor further engagements. For his role in Toxic snow, which he had embodied with great success on the stage, Franciosa received an Oscar nomination. For many are called (Career, 1959), he received the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. Another nomination for the Golden Globe was awarded Franciosa in 1964 for the Western Rio Conchos.

Franciosas career was hampered by his choleric temperament. The mid- 1970s he joined for television in the short-lived crime series as a secret agent Matt Helm on a role with which, was ten years earlier been successful in several movies his co-star in Career, Dean Martin. Franciosas last film was in 1996 City Hall, starring Al Pacino.

Anthony Franciosa was married four times, from 1952 to 1957 with the author Beatrice Bakalyar, from 1957 to 1960 with the actress Shelley Winters, and from 1961 to 1967 with the real estate agent Judy Kanter, a friend and maid of honor of Grace Kelly. With Judy Kanter Franciosa had a daughter, Nina. Since 1970, Franciosa was married to the former German fashion model Rita Thiel. From this marriage two sons, Christopher and Marco.

Anthony Franciosa suffered a stroke on 16 January 2006, where he died three days later. His former wife Shelley Winters had succumbed to a heart attack on 14 January.
