Anthony Hill (artist)

Anthony Hill ( born April 23, 1930 in London, UK, lives and works ibid.) is a British painter, graphic artist and relief. He is considered an important representative of constructivist art of geometric abstraction in the UK.

Life and work

Anthony Hill studied from 1947 to 1951 at St Martin's School of Art, he began painting in the style of Dada and Surrealism. In 1948 he began geometric- abstract painting. He created his first relief in 1954.

He worked closely with the representatives of Constructivism in England during the 1950s, such as Victor Pasmore, Adrian Heath, John Ernest, Kenneth Martin, Mary Martin, Stephen Gilbert and Gillian Wise and became an important member of the British constructivist art movement. From 1953 to 1963 he was a teacher at the Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art, and from 1964 at the Chelsea School of Art

Anthony Hill created numerous reliefs. A feature of this relief, the use of non-traditional, industrial materials such as aluminum and plexiglass. He participated in exhibitions of abstract and constructivist art in Britain, Paris, Germany, Holland, Poland, Switzerland and the USA. Some of his works are part of the collection of the Tate Gallery in London. He had his first solo exhibition in 1958 at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA ) in London. He took part in the 2nd Biennale of Paris in 1961, the 4th Biennial of San Marino in 1963 and in 1968 with four colored metal plastic reliefs participants in the documenta 4 in Kassel. In 1983, the Hayward Gallery held a major retrospective of Anthony Hills constructivist work.

Anthony Hill had a lifelong fascination for mathematics, and there were many mathematicians in his circle of acquaintances. Together with his colleague John Ernest, he has contributed to graph theory and was in 1979, in recognition of a number of important mathematical writings as a member of the London Mathematical Society. Also, almost all of his reliefs were based on mathematical structure and logic.
