Anthony J. Griffin

Anthony Jerome Griffin ( born April 1, 1866 in New York City; † January 13, 1935 ) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1918 and 1935 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Anthony Jerome Griffin attended public schools, City College, the Cooper Union and the New York University Law School. After receiving his license to practice law in 1892, he began practicing in New York City. After the outbreak of the Spanish-American War, he presented to the Company F of the 69th Regiment of New York Volunteer Infantry, and commanded them in 1898 and 1899. He founded in 1905 the Bronx Independent, where he worked as an editor until 1907. Between 1911 and 1915 he sat in the Senate from New York. He took 1915 on the Constituent Assembly of New York. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party.

He was elected in a by-election in the 22nd electoral district of New York in the 65th Congress, there to fill the vacancy that was created by the resignation of Henry Bruckner. His seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, he took on 5 March 1918. In the congressional elections of 1918 he was elected to the 66th Congress. Griffin was re-elected eight times in a row.

He died on January 13, 1935 in New York City and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
