Anthony L. Knapp

Anthony Lausett Knapp ( born June 14, 1828 in Middletown, Orange County, New York, † May 24, 1881 in Springfield, Illinois ) was an American politician. Between 1861 and 1865 he represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Anthony Knapp was the older brother of Congressman Robert M. Knapp ( 1831-1889 ). In 1839 he moved with his parents to Jerseyville, Illinois. He attended the public schools of his respective home. After a subsequent study of law and qualifying as a lawyer, he started in Jerseyville to work in this profession. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Democratic Party launched a political career. Between 1859 and 1861 he was a member of the Illinois Senate.

Following the resignation of Mr John Alexander McClernand Knapp was at the due election for the sixth seat of Illinois as his successor in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he took up his new mandate on 12 December 1861. After a re-election, he could remain until March 3, 1865 Congress. Since 1863 he represented there, the then newly established tenth electoral district of his state. This period was marked by the events of the Civil War. In 1864 he gave up another candidacy.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Anthony Knapp moved to Chicago in 1865 and 1867 to Springfield, where he practiced law. He died on 24 May 1881 in Springfield.
