Anthony Minghella

Anthony Minghella, CBE ( born January 6, 1954, the Isle of Wight, United Kingdom, † March 18, 2008 in London) was a British film director, film producer, screenwriter, dramatist, radio play author, theater and opera director.

Life

Minghella was the son of Italian -Scottish parents, who operated on the Isle of Wight a factory for ice cream. After finishing school, he studied at the University of Hull, where he was for a time a lecturer. In 1978 he directed a short film first. Since 1981 he has worked as a writer and story editor. He became known for his plays, radio plays radio, the television series Inspector Morse and many screenplays for film and television. He developed the screenplays for the 1988 successfully running television series The Storyteller of Muppets creator Jim Henson.

Also known as a producer, he was successful, including for the films The Quiet American, The Interpreter and The Reader, for which he ( "Best Film" category) was nominated for an Academy Award in 2008 posthumously. Together with his friend and colleague, Sydney Pollack, he founded the production company Mirage Enterprises. The director Minghella was considered a good actor leader, under his direction, it brought many performers to Oscar nominations, two actresses were given the award for "Best Supporting Actress ": Juliette Binoche ( The English Patient ) and Renée Zellweger ( Cold Mountain ).

Towards the end of his life Minghella returned to his beginnings in radio and on stage back: 2006, his radio play Eyes Down Looking at Jew Law in honor of Samuel Beckett on BBC Radio 3 aired a year earlier, its staging of the Puccini opera Madame Butterfly in the English National Opera in London premiere and was also shown at the National Opera of Vilnius and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. His last work as a scriptwriter was the script for the musical film Nine ( together with Michael Tolkin ). His recent directing credits include the pilot episode of crime series Detective Agency (Original Title:. English The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency ), which the BBC aired five days after his death for the first time.

Minghella was with the coming of Hong Kong choreographer, producer and actress Carolyn Choa ( Truly Madly Deeply ) married. The couple has two children who are active in the film industry: daughter Hannah Minghella in production, son Max Minghella as an actor ( Agora - The pillars of heaven ). His sister Edana Minghella and his brother Dominic Minghella ( eg for the German television series Doctor Martin) are screenwriters.

Minghella died at the age of 54 in a London hospital of internal bleeding, which occurred in the neck after surgery a Tonsillenkarzinoms and a carcinoma.

Awards

1984 Minghella won the London Critics 'Prize as the most promising young playwright, the 1986 Critics' Prize for his play Made in Bangkok as the best piece of the season.
