Anthony Munday

Anthony Munday (* 1560 in London, † August 10, 1633 ) was an English author. The precursor William Shakespeare is today known for his work on Robin Hood.

Life and work

Munday was born the son of a cloth merchant and was trained as a printer. This prompted Munday also located at 1576 letter to try. His first work was some verses that he added to a volume of poems, which he printed straight. After returning from a trip to France and Italy, he began to publish more works.

Munday specialized in various stages of his career in various genres. Knight romances he wrote especially 1588-1602 and again 1618/1619, dramas 1596-1602 and Lord Mayor Shows 1602-1616. Moreover, he translated Knight romances from Spanish into English, published poems, newspaper articles and staged public spectacles. Munday entertained always lively and good connections with clients, publishers, patrons, printers and theater owners, so that he also had a financially successful career. At the end of his life he had received about 80 titles and awards, a current issue of the Survey of London was appointed " clerk of the City of London" and had awarded the contract to compose. In his time he was one of the most popular and widely read authors of England.

None of the traditional authors of his time so many works are from a long period handed down as of Munday. Nevertheless, he is considered one of the less important writers of his time and has been in the literature the dubious reputation of an uninspired writer par excellence wage. A speculative book of 1928 until the publication of two monographs mid-2000s, the only biography of Munday, and to date there is no work edition of his works.
