Anthony Payne

Anthony Payne ( born August 2, 1936 in London ) is a British composer, musicologist and music critic.

Life

Payne wrote already as a student 's own compositions. The studied music at the University of Durham. Since then he has worked as a freelance artist, music and high school teachers. Payne is married to the soprano Jane Manning, with whom he founded the ensemble Jane's Minstrels in 1988.

Work

Payne's work as a composer is heavily influenced by the English Romantics of the early 20th century such as Edward Elgar, Frederick Delius and Vaughan Williams.

His breakthrough came in the mid-1960s with his Phoenix show. It was followed by numerous commissioned works. Overall, Payne has presented over 50 compositions of different genres as well as several musicological writings, including the works of Arnold Schoenberg and Frank Bridge. Payne is also working as a music critic, among other things, the British newspapers The Times, The Daily Telegraph and The Independent.

Caused a stir with his Payne listed for the first time in February 1998 version of the previously unfinished Third Symphony by Edward Elgar. On 2 August 2006, his 70th birthday, was also in the BBC Proms Elgar by Payne reconstructed and finished Pomp and Circumstance March No.. 6 welturaufgeführt.
