Anthropological Society of London

The Anthropological Society of London (English Anthropological Society of London) was founded in 1863 by Richard Francis Burton and James Hunt. It was then cleaved from the Ethnological Society, founded in 1843 and saw himself henceforth as a counterpart to the older institution.

The anthropological scientific society, Hunt, deal with the collection of facts and determination of laws of nature, which could provide explanations for the diversity of humankind. You " throw their nets wider intellectual from " and dedicate both the physical and cultural aspects of the people.

The real differences between the two organizations, however, were lower. The members of the Ethnological Society believed, without exception, that people are shaped by their environment; when Charles Darwin published his theory of natural selection, they supported this. Nor were advocates of monogenism and politically liberal, especially in breed specific issues.

Hunt and his followers, however, were vehemently anti- Darwinist adjusted in contrast and strong advocates of the theory of polygenism. You was contrary to the policy of the rest of their society, so they supported eg in the American Civil War, the Confederate forces. The theme that the two groups but most split, was the so-called Negro question. Hunt believed that black Africans are a different species than white people belong ( the polygenistische point of view), this inferior inevitable and therefore best suited for slave labor.

Many leading members of the Ethnological Society, however, were the efforts of the British Empire, to eradicate the slave trade involved and many of them also believed that all people have the same origin had ( the monogenistische point of view) and that the African population is certainly to be among the people. Black Africans (and others ) but also held them for not " civilization capable " and therefore best to work (and, subsequently, to slave labor ) are suitable.
