Antimony ( III) chloride is a chemical compound consisting of the elements antimony and chlorine, belonging to the class of the chlorides.

History

Antimony (III ) chloride was first shown by Johann Rudolph Glauber.

Production and representation

Antimony ( III) chloride can be obtained by reaction with concentrated hydrochloric acid of antimony or antimony (III ) oxide.

Also possible is the representation of the elements.

Properties

Physical Properties

Antimony ( III) chloride is crystallized in a distorted uranium ( III) chloride structure. It is in the form of a colorless soft mass with a pungent odor, which fumes in moist air. The fumes of antimony (III ) chloride are 7.88 times heavier than air.

Chemical Properties

Antimony (III ) chloride is readily soluble in water but hydrolyzed violently upon addition of larger amounts of water, with antimony ( III) oxychloride and hydrogen chloride formed.

Use

Antimony ( III) chloride is used as a reagent for the detection of vitamin A and other carotenoids in the Carr-Price test, wherein a blue complex compound is formed, which can be measured by colorimetry. It also serves as a catalyst for polymerization and chlorination reactions in organic chemistry, in the preparation of flame retardants, pigments, and other antimony compounds. Furthermore, the compound was previously added absinthe to artificially induce a milky haze of the drink.

Trivia

In the TV series All Creatures Great and Small ( Season 3, Episode 12) die several calves by a mysterious poisoning until it turns out that their horn approaches had recently been etched away with antimony trichloride. The resulting antimony-containing crusts fell into the chuck and were mitgefressen.

Safety

Antimony (III ) chloride is classified as carcinogenic category 2 and mutagen by category 3B classified.
