Antiochus (father of Seleucus I Nicator)

Antiochus (Greek Ἀντίοχος; 4th century BC ) was the father of Seleucus I of the forefather of the Hellenistic Seleucid dynasty.

He was, among others, Arrian, Appian and Justin as a husband and father of Laodice of Seleucus I. called. Justin commented that Antiochus had been a senior officer of King Philip II of Macedonia. However, also narrated by Justin Seleucid founding mythology declared as actual father of Seleucus the god Apollo, who was pregnant Laodice in form of a serpent. Seleucus himself has established this legend, by letting himself confirmed his divine descent from Branchidai oracle at Didyma, after he had established his rule in 312 BC Babylon. Apparently, following the same myth him a few centuries later a sister named " Didymeia " was attributed, which should underpin the connection of the Seleucids in addition to Apollo. Despite all named Seleucus later as king in Asia several towns founded by his human father (see: Antioch ), of which the best known is Antioch on the Orontes.

Antiochus ' own origins is excessively source unknown. It is possible that he was a brother of the officer Ptolemy († 333 BC), whose father was called Seleucus.
