Life

Theobaldus Buccapecus was probably town of Roman origins. Until April 17, 1121 it is occupied as a cardinal deacon of Santa Maria Nuova in Rome, from April 6, 1123 as Cardinal Priest of San Anastasia ( also in Rome). On December 15, 1124, he was elected as Celestine II in Rome ( Church of St. Pancras ) to succeed the late Pope Calixtus three days earlier II. In this respect, the designation as anti-pope is wrong. In particular, because there was a pope of that name later, it is done in most lists Pope as anti-pope, but would rightly Papstelekt Celestine ( II ) can be mentioned.

The election in the church of St. Pancras but was disturbed by armed supporters of the Roman city nobles Leo Frangipane. Under his leadership Armed penetrated into the church and drove the voters apart.

In opposition to Celestine II brought the imperial -minded nobility Cardinal Bishop of Ostia, Lamberto Scannabecchi, to the Chair of Peter. This, who took the name of Honorius II, but abandoned in view of the irregularities in the election to the tiara, because he is not suspected of arrogance one wanted to expose him by law not entitled Office.

This won Honorius the followers of Celestine II itself, which at December 16, 1124, just one day after his election, renounced the papal dignity, after Honorius II was confirmed in a re- canonical choice.
