Antipope Constantine II

Constantine II (* Nepi, Lazio, † after 769 in the monastery Cella Nova ) was a layman by his brother, the Duke of Nepi Toto, shortly after the death of Pope Paul I by force, probably used on 5 July 767. He is always referred to as anti-pope (pseudo papa, papa anti ). This is true but not at Constantine II, only with Philip, who was 768 used by the Lombards as anti-pope, and could only be kept short. Because as anti-pope a pope is called when it was erected during the lifetime of an already canonically elected and not resigned Pope. He was the son of Tiberius. With the help of Lombard he was deposed middle 768, after the election of Pope Stephen III. blinded and sentenced to imprisonment monastery. The visited mainly by Frankish bishops Lateran Synod ( 769 ) confirmed his deposition. The followers of Constantine II were bloodily persecuted.
