Antistatic wrist strap

An anti -static wrist strap is used to ground and so to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD). Otherwise these could easily destroy Integrated Circuits.

Physical background

Some non-conductors can be charged by friction (see also static electricity ). For example, may be colloquially as " loaded" a man when he shuffles with rubber soles with dry air across the carpet. If this man grounds for example, by touching a metal object, while a current flows until the potential difference is compensated (see also electrostatics ).

Structure, function and applications

Application, see Anti -static wrist straps wherever electrostatic discharges are harmful, such as in the assembly of printed circuit boards with electronic components or the assembly of complete assemblies. Similarly, an anti -static wrist strap should be worn at the De-/Montage a computer or other devices with highly integrated circuits, unless other measures to prevent ESD have been taken, such as anti-static shoes, Tisch-/Fußbodenbeläge. In the absence of anti-static measures ranges may have a touch of an exposed contact to destroy a component. For this reason, stocked with ICs boards should only be touched on the edge.

The anti -static wrist strap ensures a high resistance, any charge can flow and may occur hence no potential difference (ie voltage ). However, it should be used as a substitute for a wrist band due to the low resistance of no simple cable. The built- in anti-static resistance bands, according to VDE standard 1 M, prevented from contact with hazardous voltages larger currents can flow to the ground, which could cause serious injury to the carrier otherwise.
