Antofagasta de la Sierra is the capital of the department of Antofagasta de la Sierra in the province of Catamarca in northwestern Argentina. The village has 667 inhabitants.

History

The area around Antofagasta de la Sierra was inhabited by the indigenous Diaguitas and Calchaquíes.

Economy

The main agricultural products of the area are: sheep, llamas, olives, peaches, hazelnuts, grapes, quince, cotton, seed potatoes and spices such as cumin and anise. Tourism has played an important role in the economy. Especially the nearby volcanoes and calderas including Galán caldera and the Antofagasta de la Sierra Mountains. The village celebrates the feast of death each year.
