Antofagasta plc

Antofagasta plc is a Chilean mining group headquartered in the UK. The company produces mainly copper, but in addition also molybdenum and gold. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and listed in the FTSE 100 Index.

Company History

The group began in 1888 as a railway company Antofagasta ( Chili ) and Bolivia Railway Company (now Ferrocarril de Antofagasta a Bolivia, FCAB abbreviated ). The company, founded by British investors, built a rail link between the Pacific coast city of Antofagasta and the Bolivian capital La Paz

1980, the family acquired the company Luksic and diversified the company by, among others, took the step in the mining industry. The mines are in Chile Los Pelambres, El Tesoro and Michilla and it continues to own the railroads that transport the copper ore.

In a joint venture, it has the mining rights in a 60,000 square kilometer area in Peru.

In recent years, Antofagasta generated due to the dramatic increase in copper prices on the world market high profits.

With their equity stake of 65 % (as of mid-2013 ), the Chilean billionaire family Luksic directs even today the company's fortunes.

Production

2012 Antofagasta produced 709,600 tonnes of copper, 12,200 tonnes of molybdenum and 299,900 ounces of gold.
