Antofalla

The Antofalla is a 6,409 -meter-high stratovolcano in the province of Catamarca in northwestern Argentina. The volcano is the third highest of the still active volcanoes in the world. It is located on the outskirts of Punta de Atacama, a high plateau in the east of the Atacama Desert. At the summit of the volcano there are ruins from the Inca time, the nearest settlement is the village Antofalla with 45 inhabitants (as of 2001). The name " Antofalla " comes from the almost extinct Chilean Kunza idiom and means: place where the sun dies.
