Antoine de Sartine

Antoine Raymond Gualbert Juan Gabriel de Sartine, Comte d' Alby, ( born July 12, 1729 Barcelona, † September 7, 1801 in Tarragona ) was a French politician, 1759-1774 Prefect of Police of Paris ( lieutenant général de police ) and then served as Minister of the Navy.

Life and work

His father was a native of Lyon financier Antoine Sartine ( 1681-1744 ). The career of his son in the Paris police administration of the ancien régime was originally a civil Sartine the nobility.

Sartine was the organizer of a close-knit spy network against more revolutionary machinations of the Age of Enlightenment. 1759, he was appointed Prefect of Police of Paris and was from 1763 head of the censorship board. From 1774 to 1780 he was State Secretary in the Ministry of Marine.

Sartine emigrated at the beginning of the revolution in Spain.
