Antoine Français de Nantes

Antoine Français, called Français de Nantes, (* 1756 in Beaurepaire, Isère, † 1836), French customs and excise officer, revolutionary and statesman.

Français was a customs official in Nantes and was after the outbreak of the revolution soon one of the leading members of the local Jacobin clubs. Later he became a member of the Legislative Assembly ( Assemblée legislature), was in 1792 for 14 days President of the French National Assembly ( June 10 to 24 ) and in 1798 a member of the Council of Five Hundred ( Conseil des Cinq Cents ). Under Napoleon Bonaparte, he was the Directeur Général des Droits - réunis the overall supervision of the tax revenue and in 1808 raised to the comte de l'Empire. In 1831 he became a peer of France.
