Antoine Gouan

Antoine Gouan (* November 15, 1733 in Montpellier, † September 1, 1821 in Montpellier) was a French physician and botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Gouan ".

Life

Antoine Gouan was born on November 15, 1733 in Montpellier, his father was a lawyer, Jean -Guillaume Gouan (* 1708) the Court, the Cour des Comptes puis conseiller - maître. However, an embezzlement forced him in 1776 to resign from this position. He was married to Anne Salavy, the mother of A. Gouan. Incidentally Antoine Gouan had a same name uncle (1712-1784) was director who at Hôpital Saint- Eloi de Montpellier.

He began his studies in Toulouse, but then put it in Montpellier, where he studied medicine. In his views Gouan greatly from his former Professor François Boissier de Sauvages (1706-1767) was coined, a representative of the linnéanischen method in France. Gouan doctorate at August 25, 1752 and became a doctor at Saint- Eloi Hospital, Montpellier. But soon after taking up his work, he became interested in the natural sciences.

In 1762 he published a catalog of the plants in the Botanical Garden Montpellier, he headlined Hortus regius monspeliensis. This catalog was the first botanical work of France, which was based on the biological nomenclature Linnaeus. Three years later in 1765 he published the Flora Monspeliaca. In 1770 the Historia Piscicum Apparitions an ichthyological work that in Linnaeus's system significantly increased the number of fish.

In 1766 he became the successor of François Boissier de Sauvages de Lacroix ( 1706-1767 ) of medical school and 1783 foreign member of the Linnean Society in London. In 1790 he was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

From Gouan many letters have been preserved, including correspondence with Carl Linnaeus, Albrecht von Haller, Jean -Guillaume Bruguiere (1749/1750-1798), Jean -Jacques Rousseau and Carl Peter Thunberg.

It is reported that Gouan have the first Ginkgo biloba planted in France, which is still in the botanical garden of Montpellier today. This Pierre Marie Auguste Broussonet had brought with him in August 1782 after his return from London to France.
